Tips for rustic living room style

The rustic style has one big advantage: its timelessness. That’s why it’s a style that can always be used when you want to decorate a house in a cozy, traditional way, and above all in harmony with nature. On the other hand, this style is perfect in areas such as the living room or living room.

For this it is not necessary to resort to the typical fireplace or the cowhide rug. On the contrary, you can do without these things and still get a rustic-style decor

Tips for creating a rustic-style room

Regardless of whether we have a country house or a city apartment, we can easily incorporate the rustic style into our spaces in a very simple way : looking for ornaments made with natural products.

In the case of fabrics, we use the “purest” fibers and the most traditional design patterns; while I in the case of objects, we resort to wood, stones, and certain touches of metal.

And how does this turn into a living room? Very easy. Let’s take this step by step. First, this translates into placing a medium to large-sized rug, handcrafted, with natural fibers (jute, bamboo, sisal, twine, wool, among other types of rugs) or imitation (leather, by example).

The furniture should be mainly “for rest” (chairs, benches, beds) and, in the background, “box” type, that is, for storage. You can also place furniture; ” a table”? Yes, because in the rustic style these are not the protagonists.

the furniture

Although the furniture must be adjusted in proportion to the space of the room, rustic furniture is generally spacious, with clean lines and solid materials and, as mentioned above, with handcrafted finishes. So they have a lot of presence. Nowadays, the rustic style has been adapted to the minimalist current in the following ways:

  • A single sofa or deckchair and a “table” furniture (coffee table). Accessories placed here would be wooden objects, basketwork, candles, a single-colored carpet, and an interior plant to add a splash of color.
  • Instead of placing “box” furniture such as shop windows and bookcases, some wooden shelves can be placed on one of the walls of the living room (the length will depend on the available space). And you can incorporate handcrafted ceramic accessories in neutral tones and wooden objects. As far as furniture is concerned, it can consist of a sofa and a small coffee table, or two sofas and a small armchair.
  • You can also have all the typical elements of a living room: sofa, armchairs, coffee table and shelves, but minimizing the use of decorative objects so as not to saturate the space.

What are the characteristic colors of the rustic style?

  • Earth tones: are all those that are included within the warm color tones, which range from yellow to brown. Therefore, it includes ochers, oranges, pinks, reds, browns (light and dark browns), in addition to certain shades close to gray.
  • Neutral colors: white, raw, bone, sand, beige, etc…

Although these are the characteristic colors of this style, you can always incorporate other colors such as blue and green. On the other hand, we can play with white and black to enhance a tone, or highlight a particular element.

It is very convenient to take advantage of the different shades of the base colors, to create a uniform environment, without it becoming monotonous.

  • Incorporate unicolor pieces of different textures. On the sofa, for example, you can add several pillows (of different sizes) with completely different textures, but always in the natural. In addition, it is always recommended to place a blanket, to create the visual effect of an invitation to rest and retreat.
  • Plants are not an essential requirement, but it is always a good idea to incorporate them as they add a certain freshness to the environment. In addition, they help to easily create the feeling that you can enjoy nature in the comfort of your own home.
  • There is no need to fear the different pieces: rocking chairs, trunks, footrests; as these enhance the comfort and warmth of the environment.
  • If you have brick or cement walls (unfinished) take advantage of this and highlight them. This way you will have another element in your rustic decor, without having to make almost any effort.
  • It is not necessary to make a special decoration on the walls. Painting them with a neutral tone or leaving them completely white works very well. However, if we want to incorporate them more explicitly in the decoration, we can put a wallpaper with a wooden design, for example.
  • Lighting should be warm and preferably dim. Although this is not a rule. On the other hand, lamps should be sober pieces, finished in wood, brass, or wrought iron.

Conclusion

As you may have noticed, it is possible to obtain a rustic-style living room through the type of elements, and their arrangement.

Of course, this will always depend on our taste, but the important thing is that you can find a way to adapt to the “rules”.
